Harry meets Aang

The mystic schools (or wizardry schools if you prefer) pull the game toward Harry Potter. Even though the actual class work that made up much of Harry’s day is not a part of the game, the secret existence of the schools and deadly rivalry between the schools set a distinctive Harry Potter like tone. Oh, and wands too.

Hidden from view

A vitally important point here: these schools are hidden, very well hidden. You can’t just decide to attend the local mystic school. They either have to find you, or you must do some impressive sleuthing indeed. Once you start attending, mystic training must remain a secret. If not, wizards from other schools will come after you with murder on their minds because magic is a limited resource and every school is convinced every other school out there is recklessly and selfishly producing too many wizards and disrupting the very fabric of the world. Of course at school mystics are free to train and practice, but when out amongst “muggles” one must fit right in and seem to be just like everyone else.

Because these schools are hidden, players can rarely start their careers as mystics. A side effect of this delay is that a third grade mystic will typically be in a party of eighth level characters. Of course, the mystic will have other skills, but the point is that characters that choose a more open class will be able to focus longer and more exclusively on their career.

Unlimited casting

At school, mystics learn spells. These spells have components, but they don’t erase from the caster’s mind once cast. Spells drain and even harm the caster, but a mystic is free to cast spells over and over again as long as the spell’s components are on hand (which of course costs money).

This means that down in some forgotten dungeon, a mystic can utilize their full repertoire and does not need to guess at what spells might be needed prior to travelling to the dungeon entrance. Of course on a city street any spell can still be used, but only if the mystic is certain no one will notice.

Mystics need money

When a mystic attends school, a portion of the tuition applies to spell components. These components are often rare or difficult to obtain. One of the services a school provides to their students is the supply of components. But it all costs money.
